She's strong; she's confident without making you fear she'll kick you just for the hell of it.

KING MAKER
TAMMY AND THE LORDS OF MISRULE
Her Highness Porcupinus Records

By Brenda Cowan

I have found a Pop Queen in the making for you. That's right, I said Queen. Tammy ain't no powder puff princess. No, this young lady is a queen ready to rule the pop world. Tammy Ferranti has a voice and talent that comes with real punch -- no lay-down, weak hormone-laced work here.

King Maker starts off with "Kind of Girl," which sets the tone for the CD and tells you a lot about Ms. Ferranti. She's strong; she's confident without making you fear she'll kick you just for the hell of it. The lyric, "I'm not the kind of girl who goes for competition/I'm just the kind of girl who does her very best," is her anthem and gives this strong piece of work the start that makes you want to hear more.

The band is tight and shows off what really talented musicians they are. The songs are full of strong guitars without overriding the vocals. Tammy's voice is one of the strongest -- and I believe until now, one of the least appreciated -- of the Los Angeles pop scene. The L.A. pop scene is littered with female leads who sacrifice strength for cutesy, come-on images (no, not naming names here, but you know who the weak-voiced ones are!). Tammy does not hide her strength, but instead puts it out there, laced with her feminine reality. Femininity and strength are NOT exclusive.

I expect even stronger work from this band! Tammy's song writing is good, but it does have some room for growth, and you can hear she's got the talent and the commitment to do it. No one who delivers her work with this much conviction wouldn't have the strength to grow. Again, I believe Tammy has not been taken seriously enough by the local music scene, but sometimes you can't see the diamond shining right under your nose. So, get out there and support this band! I predict that even greater things are coming from them, and you'll get to be one of the early ones on the bandwagon and earn the right to be smug about it!

Tammy and the Lords of Misrule are made up of these fine musicians: Tammy Ferranti - guitar and vocals, Rick Heitzwebel - drums, Don Mogill - guitar and Roy Lansdown - bass. You can visit them on the web at www.misrule.com, check out their tour dates and most importantly, purchase the CD! If you appreciate strong female vocals, you'll want this Pop Queen in your collection. All songs are written by Tammy Ferranti.
