White makes me wish his voice was a tangible object I could grasp and wrap myself around.

TONY JOE WHITE
Swamp Records

By Brenda Cowan

From the first guitar lick on “Run for Cover,” you know you are in for a real treat from a truly original artist. Tony Joe White's latest offering reminds us all how sensual and intriguing music can be. Yes, I know his voice tends to be an acquired taste for some, but I encourage those of you unfamiliar with his deep growl to take the time to let the swamp fox surprise you with his passion.

White blends his voice with several guest artists on his new album, Uncovered: “Not One Bad Thought” with Mark Knopfler, “Did Somebody Make A Fool Out Of You with Eric Clapton, “Louvelda” with J.J. Cale, “Shakin' The Blues” with Waylon Jennings, and “Baby, Don't Look Down” with Michael McDonald. Personally, I don't believe White needs any help singing his songs, but the contrast between his voice and his various partners is intriguing. I don't think the Michael McDonald pairing is as strong a choice as he could have made; his deep, emotional voice kind of overwhelms McDonald. But all in all, this CD is worth the time to experience.

White’s voice has a life of its own; you feel and it and hear it all at the same time. His slow, hip-swinging guitar gives his vocals the only real partnership he needs. White has also chosen to record a new version of his classic song, “Rainy Night In Georgia.” Oh, God, he has managed to improve on a nearly perfect song. The years have slowed his voice and added a knowledge and sadness to the song that gives it new life and a brand new experience. The entire CD is worth it just for this one new classic.

White makes me wish his voice was a tangible object I could grasp and wrap myself around. It's a very real physical and emotional experience to listen to him croon through this collection of songs. Tony Joe White is a master of the swamp blues and all I can say to anyone and everyone reading this is head over to www.echotunes.com and get your own copy. And get ready to feel the heat rise, even in winter.
